Dunegrass

Shelter Island, NY

Together for almost ten years, DuneGrass has been performing an eclectic repertoire to audiences at festivals, concerts and contra dances all over the East End of Long Island.  Listeners will enjoy carefully crafted arrangements of original songs and sprightly instrumentals, and will also recognize familiar tunes, but with a “bluegrass” twist.  You might hear a classic from Patsy Cline, a “Django” flavored instrumental or even a Beatle tune or two.  DuneGrass performances easily transition from folk to jazz, bluegrass and swing, punctuated by friendly banter with the audience.

Fiddler Dan Skabeikis has delved deeply into just about every style of music that a violin can play.  With a career spanning four decades, he is just as at home with a bouncy swing tune as he is with a classical etude.  Dan contributes many original jigs and reels to the DuneGrass sound, and enjoys harmonic interplay with the rest of the band.

Lead and harmony vocalist Lisa Shaw (guitar, piano) draws on years of exposure to many musical styles.  An accomplished soloist who grew up listening to Motown and greats like Laura Nero and Joni Mitchell, Lisa has developed a vocal style all her own.  She has also worked as a musical/choral director for many community events, and is a worship leader at First Baptist Church of Greenport.

Tom Hashagen (mandolin, guitar, harmony and lead vocals), says that for him musically, everything changed thirty years ago when he heard the Dillards.  The breakneck speed of the instrumental licks and the vocal harmonies just grabbed him and they haven’t let go.  Like Lisa, he listened to Motown and learned Beatle harmonies like everybody else did – first singing John’s part, then Paul’s!  Tom cites David Grisman and Jethro Burns as two of his mandolin heroes.

Living in Colorado exposed bassist Sandra Chapin to the world of bluegrass, and she hasn’t looked back. After moving to Orient she met and started jamming with Dan Skabeikis, who invited Lisa and Tom to a couple of sessions, and DuneGrass was born!  As well anchoring the band’s sound with the double bass, Sandra provides the occasional “twang” on some vocal numbers.
